Hidden Cameras FAQs

How do Hidden Cameras work?
An everyday item is turned into a hidden camera with a small onboard camera. DefendWell.com offers a wide range of items to be sure we have exactly what you need for the location you want to monitor. The camera can be wired or wireless, with a wired camera being connected to a DVR or VCR using a cable, and a wireless camera transmitting a signal to a receiver.

Should I purchase a wired camera or wireless camera? What are the differences?
A wired camera will have a video cable that connects the camera to a DVR, VCR or monitor. If this is an option for you, it can save you money to use wired cameras. However, the convenience of wireless cameras is that you can place them almost anywhere in any room, with a transmitter sending the signal to a receiver. These can cost more money, but are much simpler to use. Wireless cameras utilize a built-in transmitter to relay the video signal to the receiver. This receiver connects to the recording or viewing equipment.

How far will a wireless hidden camera signal travel?
Standard wireless hidden cameras have a transmittal range of of up to 1,000 feet; however, high powered (HP) wireless hidden cameras can transit the signal much further at up to 2,500 feet.

I need to capture several angles in the same room. Can I use more than one wireless hidden camera in one room?
Yes, you absolutely can! One location can easily house up to four wireless cameras, but if you would like to view all the cameras simultaneously, you will need a receiver for each. In the alternative, you can use one receiver for all your hidden cameras, but you will only be able to view them individually. Assess before purchasing how many cameras you will need so that we can program them all on different channels.

Will my cordless telephone interfere with my Wireless Camera?
Interference is typically minimal, but can occur between phones and cameras that are operating on the 2.4 GHz frequency. To minimize the likelihood of interference, do not keep the phone between the camera and the receiver. Another potential source of interference includes wireless internet connections.

What is this 2.4 GHz wireless frequency?
Frequency describes what is used to transmit a signal or data. The transmitters in all our wireless hidden cameras operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency.

Are the transmitters in your Wireless Hidden Camera FCC approved?
Yes, they are FCC and Industry Canada Certified.

I saw CCD listed in the specifications. What is CCD?
CCD is a tiny silicon chip that creates an image through the manipulation of light into voltage variations. It has a high resolution quality, and can operate effectively in even low-light situations. 1/3” CCD is considered the standard. You will find CCD in high-quality hidden cameras as it is prized for it's ability to record under almost any light circumstances.

What is a Quad, and what does it allow?
A Quad enables you to monitor 4 cameras at the same time by dividing your monitor into four sections. All cameras can record simultaneously, or you can use a switching monitor, which records the camera actively showing. Typically, televisions have 2 inputs allowing for up to 2 cameras, but the use of a Quad doubles this capacity to 4.

Can a Wireless Hidden Camera work for me? Will the receiver pick up the signal through walls even two feet thick?
As long as your walls do not contain an excessive amount of metal, the receivers will work just fine.

Where can I find the voltage of my camera?
We list the voltage of each camera within it's description, with the range for the products we carry being 9 volts (CMOS) to 12 volts and 24 volts.

What is the difference between a varifocal lens and a fixed lens?
A fixed lens has a fixed focus – the downside is that it cannot provide you with zoom functionality, but the upside is that it typically allows more light to pass through it than a varifocal lens, meaning better results in a low light situation. Varifocal lenses can zoom, meaning you can set them for a variety of focal lengths.

What is the true difference between VCRs and DVRs? Is one better than the other?
VCRs require VHS tapes, which have a limited lifespan (recording over them multiple times reduces quality, eventually rendering them useless). In addition to requiring the use of VHS tapes, if there is something you want to locate on a tape, you must fast forward and rewind the tape, which can take a considerable amount of time. In contrast, DVR systems record their images to a hard disk drive, and stores the images digitally, negating the tape altogether, and providing an overall higher quality result. An additional benefit to the DVR is that you can access the imagery via the Internet from any location, which would not be possible with a physical VHS tape. The length of time a DVR records is impacted by a few variables: the capacity of the hard drive, the number of frames per second the camera is recording, and the total number of cameras being used. Generally, if you are using a single camera, and recording constantly, you will use 1 GB per day. If you do choose to use a VCR, most household models record for approximately 10 hours, but advanced models are available.

What are they referring to when they say Plug and Play camera?
A camera that easily connects to a television or VCR via an RCA video plug and power plug. You will need to purchase cable to run the signal back to the television or VCR.

Are there temperatures requirements for the safety of the hidden cameras?
There are slightly different safe temperatures for black and white and color cameras. It is recommended that black and white cameras operate between -10 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 and 50 degrees Celsius), while the suggested safe temperature range for color cameras is between -10 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 and 40 degrees Celsius). Either type of camera can be safely stored between -22 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 degrees and 70 degrees Celsius).
